Simon & Schuster is seeking a senior designer to design and layout book interiors for its adult division. This person will be involved in, on average, 40-50 projects each year.

An ideal candidate:
• Is an Adobe InDesign expert and book design enthusiast
• Has experience designing books with complex interior elements, such as indexes, endnotes, maps, diagrams, illustrations, and photo inserts
• Understands book production and printing standards
• Has experience hiring and overseeing the work of freelance designers and illustrators
• Understands how their composition work impacts downstream processes, including ebook production and future print editions
• Will work collaboratively with production editorial to ensure the manuscript and InDesign document are coded complementarily and coding best practices are applied rigorously from manuscript to finished InDesign files


• 5+ years of experience designing original book interiors in trade publishing
• 5+ years of experience in desktop publishing/composition
• 5+ years of layout experience in Adobe InDesign
• Experience hiring and overseeing freelance designers and artists
• Knows proofreader’s marks
• Experience manipulating illustrations and photos in Photoshop
• Experience creating and manipulating vector art in Illustrator

Nice to have:

• Working knowledge of HTML/CSS
• Ebook production experience
• Experience working with in-house and external composition teams
• Experience working in a content management system
