The Director, Digital Design will work collaboratively with teams from across the organization to create digital product designs and effective interactive experiences for the family of Simon & Schuster brands.  He/She will work in a fast pace environment, where turn-around time is critical, and act as a creative leader in the development of new and cutting edge designs for all digital products.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for owning digital design execution and maintenance for various digital products and experiences - specifically, websites, emails, brand identities, banner ads, hero graphics, social content and other assets for desktop and mobile devices. In addition, the role will require creating and owning branding and visual guidelines for Simon & Schuster and its properties. Most importantly, acting as the Creative Leader for all digital projects.

Job Requirements

*Create/establish and maintain the creative and aesthetics for all existing and future sites and products (from concept to finished product)
* Develop brand logo/identity for new vertical properties
* Produce interface design adhering to UX/UI best practices while working within brand guidelines
* Ensure that websites, features, functionality and assets are optimal for mobile view/use
* Provide art direction for Simon & Schuster’s video department
* Understand the technology we design for, from mobile devices to websites
* Consider and leverage usability and traffic analyses and findings
* Work productively and harmoniously as a teammate with business units and stakeholders who share responsibility for a project
* Collaborate with product managers and engineers to foster innovative solutions
* Keep abreast of current trends and the latest technological advances
* Meet regularly with product team and business units/stakeholders to review work in progress
* Revise recommendations based on any feedback comments and share approved recommendations with all stakeholders
* Work quickly within agreed upon timelines to meet deadlines successfully

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Fine Arts or a related major


5-10 years of related experience in digital creative design – experience with design for mobile devices is a must

  • Strong understanding of latest web technologies and their capabilities
  • Superior Adobe Creative Suite knowledge
  • Photoshop: Expert Level
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think proactively, prioritize multiple projects, and meet deadlines
  • Work well independently, as well as collaboratively within a group, and is able to take direction/feedback from business unit stakeholders
  • Solid technical skills and ability to define and refine requirements through a project lifecycle
  • Understanding of web file types (.fla, .flv, .jpg, .png, .swf, etc.) and understanding of the difference between major coding languages (HTML, JavaScript, Flash)
  • CSS, HTML, photo and video editing experience is a plus
  • Agency experience is strongly-preferred, but not required
  • Experience with agile development is strongly-preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of Voice UX and Voice UI preferred but not required
