Description:

The Simon & Schuster Design and Digital Content Development team is hiring an Assistant Manager for its Desktop Publishing team to help us make great books. This role reports to the Manager, Desktop Publishing. Responsibilities include:

 

• Supervising reprint corrections to front- and backlist titles. This includes reviewing file quality and composition of backlist titles for content update requests

• Assist with training staff on best practices and industry-standard print guidelines

• Assist with assigning new projects for in-house typesetting

• Coordinating InDesign to Word conversions

• Managing outsourced composition with freelancers

• Maintaining centralized repository for common tools and resources

• Typesetting and composition of new books, including making corrections to existing files

• Creating enlargement and reduction samples

• Flowing books in InDesign and reflowing books to meet new trim sizes

• Creating new books based on existing designs

• Reviewing and rebuilding assets from foreign publishers to comply with in-house design standards

 

Candidates should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, highly organized, and driven to solve problems.

Because the job is deadline-sensitive, this person must be able to manage his or her time well.


Qualifications:

- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

- Experienced with InDesign CS6 and later 

- Familiar with Photoshop CS6 and later

- Familiar with Illustrator CS6 and later

- Familiar with Quark

- Knows proofreader’s marks

- Knowledgeable about book composition standards
