Description:
The Coordinator, Public Relations will support the Smithsonian Channel Communications team, contributing to the success of the publicity strategies developed to brand the channel and position it as an industry leader by supporting the PR campaigns, daily press stories, among other responsibilities. Position is also responsible for elevating internal communication.

Specific Responsibilities:
Administrative Support:
Administrative support includes compiling the weekly clip packet distributed company-wide, managing the department's interns, highlighting trade and consumer articles of interest, maintaining internal and external press distribution lists, compiling show assets - which include photos and screeners, maintain special issues calendars and talk show hiatus schedules and troubleshooting departmental challenges as they arise. The ability to react quickly and appropriately in any situation is key.
 
External Contact:
External contact with national press is a daily occurrence in this position. Examples of requests are pitching shows and stories to key media, distributing video clips for talent appearances, assisting reporters and PR agency with photo and DVD requests, coordinating mailings. Maintaining the proper rapport with the press and accessibility to our executives allows us to leverage press opportunities to our advantage. 
 
Campaign Support:
Contributes to the effort by being responsible for certain aspects of press strategies including pitching national, regional and niche media outlet. Compile press clip packet for series premieres and finales. Provide press clips and positive network materials to the company execs for use in presentations, earnings, and corporation board meetings. 

Creative Participation:
Contributes to the creative process in the generation of story ideas, assist department VPs and consumer PR directors on various campaign functions including pitches and with specialized lists for specific series, new projects and documentaries, among other key functions. 
 
Special Events Support:
Works as needed at events such as NY/DC premieres and screenings and other functions.

Qualifications:
  • 2+ years in television publicity or related field required
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • A self-starter with the ability to troubleshoot
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and follow through on all projects
  • Polite and professional manner, exercising patience and diplomacy
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
